Demand charges — utility fees based on a site’s single highest 15-minute interval of power draw — routinely account for 30–70% of a commercial electricity bill. A single DC fast charger can draw as much power as a small building, meaning one unmanaged charging session can set the demand charge for an entire month.

Energy Guardian monitors a site’s total electrical load in real time and throttles chargers within seconds when demand approaches a set ceiling. At Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mich., a single Guardian intervention reduced a demand event on track to add roughly $2,000 in monthly demand costs to about $500 — approximately 75% of the cost avoided.
